For the next 15 months or so, we’ll hear from all the Republican presidential candidate hopefuls, each one telling us that he’s the real “Reagan Republican.”
You’d never know there were other Republican presidents, both before and after Reagan (possibly excepting Abe Lincoln).
There will be no mention of Teddy Roosevelt, the anti-trust, environmentalist Republican president; or Dwight Eisenhower, who warned of the military-industrial complex and managed to get our interstate highway system developed; or Richard Nixon, who opened relations with China (Sens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, are you paying attention?) and gave us the Environmental Protection Agency, by executive order, no less; or George W. Bush, who declared “mission accomplished” and left us with an economy in crisis.
Nope, it’ll just be Reagan, whose claim to fame is telling Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the wall and who left us with a massive budget problem.
I can hardly wait.
