It is so encouraging to read in The Tribune (Jan. 20) that Pope Francis is drafting an encyclical on the environment and global warming, to be released this summer.
His message will reach people all over the world and comes as we now hear the official news about 2014: It is, indeed, the warmest year on record.
As we are now experiencing unusually warm temperatures in January, we have to wonder — will this year be even hotter?
Warmer or cooler, it is well past the time for Congress to act on climate change. Our window of opportunity to slow down the disastrous changes to the world’s weather is rapidly closing, and one of the most effective things Congress can do is to pass the carbon fee and dividend legislation that Citizens Climate Lobby has been recommending for five years.
Congress must respond to the growing threat that faces us all by taxing carbon and moving us to a clean fuel economy.
