Whenever I have errands around Morro Bay, I try to walk or ride my bike whenever possible, So do many of my friends. Over the past year or so, I’ve noticed that I’ve been stopping to relax more than I used to. I’ve also noticed that there aren’t any nice public spots to do that downtown.
I understand the parking concerns of local business owners, but more than 10,000 people live in Morro Bay — not 10,000 cars. Taking away a couple of parking spots to provide an attractive outdoor public space for people to relax and enjoy our downtown seems like a fair trade to me. My only concern is the parklet’s six-month trial period.
Morro Bay has many events in the second half of the year, and our best weather is in the fall and early winter. I hope the trial period is extended, I hope the parklet is a success, and I hope we end up building more of them, because cities should be designed for people, not cars.
