Lon Allan’s Dec. 30 column (“California laid an egg with chicken law”) has been haunting me for days. It’s frightening when individuals are so callous that they find nothing wrong with the conditions chickens are forced to live in.
According to a PETA website, an undercover investigation in Germany found 38,000 chickens forced to live in a crowded barn, covered in their own excrement and given steady doses of antibiotics to keep them alive through conditions so filthy that the birds would have otherwise died. But as Lon stated, “They’re only chickens.”
Regardless of their conditions and room, they will end up as “meat” birds, right Lon?
I urge you all, including Lon, to go to PETA’s website http://www.kentuckyfriedcruelty.com, where you can witness suppliers cramming birds into huge waste-filled factories, breeding and drugging them to grow so large that they can’t even walk; often breaking their wings and legs. At slaughter, the birds’ throats are slit and they are dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water — often while they are still conscious.
Although the video is very disturbing, it is imperative that we all know the truth.
