Charles Krauthammer’s surprising proposal to increase federal gasoline taxes and refund FICA taxes, dollar for dollar (Jan. 9), would not benefit the poor working class at all, since they would pump their refunds right back into higher-priced gas just to get to work.
If the public ever approved such a tax, it would best serve the nation and the working class by being used to restore America’s crumbling roads, bridges and infrastructure.
American public transportation hardly rates with Third World nations. Europe and Japan are far ahead of us in this, and such upgrades would add millions of jobs, making the Keystone pipeline claims look paltry in comparison.
Such national improvement projects have always required government investment and direction. More high-paying construction jobs, more money into the economy and repairing America’s public transportation and infrastructure are far more impressive gifts to the future of America.
