I am compelled to add my voice in response to Lon Allan (Dec. 30) and “in defense of chickens.”
First, I am very proud to live in such a progressive state as California. I consider our state to be ahead of the curve when considering societal evolution.
Compassion may be viewed as a unique evolutionary trait, and one that is not exclusively reserved for human animal beings. We, the supposedly intelligent animal species, share the Earth with other creatures that experience stress, discomfort, pain, fear and trauma — just as we do. The fact that chickens have no lips, as Lon highlighted twice in the article (huh?), does not mean they don’t deserve compassion. I can assure you that lips are not a sign of higher intelligence (as frequently evidenced when observing humans). In my book of life, all creatures deserve respect and humane treatment. This law is a step in the right direction.
In closing, Lon had better consider whether reincarnation could be real, as his karma could ensure that he returns as a chicken. Cluckcluck.
