In defense of Lon Allan: As a child, my family kept a small coop of chickens in cages. I frankly do not remember them being unhappy. As an adult, I had a chance to work in a large chicken operation without cages. I am really not sure whether the chickens were happier there. Not even the most fervent animal lover can tell us how chickens feel.
What I do know is that this law has affected the price of eggs. Some grocery stores have taken advantage of this new law by offering a dozen eggs at $4 to $5. Luckily, some have not. Shop thoughtfully.
