Two recent letters by Robert Olson accused Muslims of inadequate condemnation of Islamic extremists. I am not Muslim and cannot speak for Muslims, but Mr. Olson, please consider:
If there is any lack of public statements, then I do not blame ordinary Muslims for wanting to keep a low profile. Your letters are a small example of the hostility and criticism that Muslims constantly face.
Regardless, innocent Muslims are held to a different standard than you and me. Thinking about myself, I am Catholic and of course feel sincerely horrified by the history of Catholic clergy sexual abuse. But I do not apologize for that tragedy to everyone I know, or in letters to the editor, or in any public ways. We all have issues we could be more outspoken about.
Try giving your Muslim neighbors the benefit of the doubt. Your own perspective may become less hypocritical and more compassionate.
