We would like to thank Father Greg Boyle (founder, Homeboy Industries/author of “Tattoos on the Heart”) for visiting the Central Coast to discuss his experiences working with past gang members in East L.A. He was the keynote speaker for the fourth annual SLO Gang and Youth Violence Prevention Conference on Oct. 24. The San Luis Obispo venue was a soldout event held at Mountainbrook Church.
A big shout out to his friends/guest speakers, Jessica Sanchez and Edwardo Llamas for sharing their life story to explain what led them into gangs. Their transformation into productive people is inspiring to all people involved with reaching out to others in need of assistance.
After the conference, Father Boyle toured the cabin on wheels that Hope’s Village of SLO displays as an affordable alternative housing option that all cities can use as a model. Warm housing, a place to sleep, somewhere to lock belongings, building self-esteem by helping to build a home, living in a community that becomes family — all can be the first step to healing a broken person. Again, thank you for sharing insight into helping others help themselves to move forward in life.
