San Luis Obispo’s water use for August 2014 was up 26 percent compared to August 2013. That seems like a newsworthy item.
Yet City Utilities Manager Ron Munds claims that because of years of conservation “we are not in a panic situation.”
Such an attitude may lead to comments like, “if only we had ” or “why didn’t we ” as the drought deepens or if the promised El Niño fails to materialize. And it raises questions like: Why did SLO wait until October to impose restrictions on outdoor watering? Did use increase because people thought they’d be restricted to a percentage of previous use rather than a per person allotment?
I suggest that Mr. Munds begin to “pound the water conservation message” soon.
