Katcho Achadjian’s fated nemesis, 35th Assembly District candidate Heidi Harmon, won’t be dismissed. She cut a wide swath through the rhetorical pablum that passed for Labor Day speechifying at the Sept. 1 Democratic Party picnic.
In a blazing red dress, her signature American Beauty rose pinned in her hair, Harmon delivered the party’s faithful and electric wake-up jolt, reminding them that the mushrooming catastrophe that is man-made climate change is the No. 1 challenge confronting all of us.
And since her opponent and his Republican Party continues in complete denial regarding the matter, she asked her suddenly attentive audience (and here I paraphrase), “Isn’t it about time our Democratic leadership accepted this extraordinary challenge with a show of actual resolve?”
At first, folks were taken aback. Who is this creature? She’s ain’t like any Democrat we’ve seen before. But when Harmon put that primal question, they jerked to attention; applause punctuated every observation she then made. No other speaker received similar accolades that day. In concluding remarks, state Sen. Bill Monning thanked her for stripping the scales from many eyes. Yup. Ain’t like any Democrat we’ve seen in a very long time.
