There has been a lot of confusion on this issue so I’m writing to explain my current position and my record of support on Proposition 13.
As a homeowner, I understand the importance of keeping property taxes affordable. That is why I fully support Proposition 13. I have also never voted to raise taxes. During the recession, I worked with my colleagues to balance our budgets and live within our means — all without raising taxes.
My opponent is telling voters that the “Supervisors voted to weaken Proposition 13 and raise taxes in the unincorporated areas of our county.” This is simply not true. It’s not possible.
The fact is that a county supervisor can’t raise your property taxes. Only the state Legislature and a vote of the people can change Proposition 13. Not a county supervisor.
Please don’t be spooked by my opponent’s campaign of misinformation.
Instead, ask candidates where we stand on the issues: water vs. development, water management in Paso, conservation plans, Rule 1001, plans to fix our crumbling roads, plans to preserve our county’s identity.
We have many important and complex issues before us. I am working hard to solve them.
