I appreciate Supervisor Bruce Gibson’s concerns about Diablo Canyon (“Community deserves discussion on Diablo” Sept. 16) — the stakes are too high for PG&E and the NRC to be as cavalier as they have been. However, he and many others are hugely mistaken in thinking that a nuclear power plant is the answer to climate change and that it offers “carbon-free electricity in abundance.”
There are carbon emissions galore in the mining, fabrication and transport of nuclear fuel. The entire process uses an enormous amount of water and electricity.
And then, the need for more power to cool and store all the deadly radioactive waste (in addition, of course, to the problem of our coast being a nuclear dump). Given all of this, nuclear is the dirtiest of dirty energies.
