Thanks to AnnMarie Cornejo and The Tribune for the Sept. 3 article on Teach School, now located at Grand Avenue and Slack Street in San Luis Obispo. It was charming and inspiring, as the Teach Elementary School experience will obviously be for its students. With good community efforts from all of us, that’s the way life in San Luis Obispo should be.
Sadly, the bright prospects for Teach School and the Classical Academy, at the old Pacheco school site, put in sharp perspective the misguided efforts of Cal Poly to plant a huge new multistory freshman dormitory right across Slack Street from the elementary schools. By proposing the Housing South dormitory there, so intrusive on nearby neighborhoods and the schools, Cal Poly shows it cares nothing about the wellness and community spirit of San Luis Obispo. Despite there being other environmentally superior sites for the new dorm, in Cal Poly’s narrow-minded thinking, community needs don’t count.
One hopes that the lawsuit against the Housing South dorm, by the Alliance of SLO Neighborhoods, will empower Cal Poly to plan better and move the dorm project. If you agree, log onto the ASLON website to find out how you can contribute to this effort.
