Congratulations on the thoughtful Aug. 31 editorial, “De Groot and her home deserve leeway from state.”
The Tribune summarized the problem accurately and suggested a potential plan of action. For 35 years, this amazing woman and her devoted family have essentially given their lives for the loving care of her special “kids.”
For 25 of those years, as a pediatrician, I made monthly visits at this unique facility.
Be assured, these severely handicapped youngsters have always benefitted from the highest quality of medical care — but, oh, how much more! When nobody else could or would take care of them, Sjany was and is always there: there to feed them, change them, hold them and love them!
Never miss a local story.
Maybe the state will pull her license; maybe the meager funds they provide for the care of these special kids will be discontinued. How sad that would be!
The DeGroot nursing home has been a source of pride for many of us in this community, a little commentary on what we’re like in San Luis Obispo — what we’re about. But, should governmental support fail her, remember Sjany’s words (also the title of her book): “I Will Never Give Up.”
We’re behind you, Sjany!
