As a decent, fair-minded person, you must be wondering: How did it all come to this?
Both Jews and Arabs lived in the Middle East for many years. When the Ottoman Empire collapsed, the land referred to as “Palestine” (there never was a state by that name) was divvied up between France and England as a mandate. The Arab community resented, and has been hostile to the Jewish community ever since. A few attempts to divide the land between Arabs and Jews in the early 1900s were met with refusal of the Arabs to cooperate and coexist. In 1947, the United Nations voted on and passed the “partition plan” for the two communities. The Jews accepted, hence Israel — the Arabs rejected the vote (universally considered the greatest tragic mistake they ever made). Trying to rectify that mistake with force, Arab countries have attacked Israel a few times (1948-present). Israel won, to survive. Turning down at least two major peace offers from Israel without countering. The Palestinians remain refugees. Hamas, a fanatical, fundamentalist, Palestinian terrorist organization, refuses to recognize Israel’s right to exist, and is dedicated to destroying it. A multitude of lingering, painfully unresolved issues remain.
