Regarding Cal Poly’s feasibility study for a hotel, etc., on campus — nothing like reading the primary literature to discover reality. Zaf Iqbal, (Pro/Con, Aug. 17), bothered to quote from this grandiose document, and the truth hardly matches the hucksters’ description of the plan. A big chain hotel like Marriott, run by professionals doesn’t sound like a learning experience for students — apparently they aren’t even running or managing their own Sage restaurant on campus.
No one has documented any need for an event center, ballroom, museum or hotel (based on current occupancy rates). The only thing that may be of interest and use to students and the community is a rodeo facility — but is a hotel school going to be able to teach students how to manage it?
Other than repeating the mantra “Learn by Doing,” and the promise of “thousands of visitors,” I don’t see any evidence that John Peschong read the actual feasibility study.
