A letter from 21 deputy district attorneys on April 29 endorsing Dan Dow for district attorney was an impressive show of solidarity for an office peer. It was also unimpressive for the political negativity regarding the opposing candidate, Tim Covello.
In contrast, The Tribune’s Opinion-page endorsement of Covello on May 4 was impressive for the absence of negativity. It simply reported the relative experience of each candidate and offered the preference as it saw it.
I appreciate the politics of solidarity, but I also appreciate local experience for the position of district attorney. If successful, Dow will probably not be the first deputy district attorney to overcome that experience deficit. I hope not.
Before voting, please read or reread The Tribune’s May 4 feature article on the district attorney’s race and Opinion-page endorsement of Tim Covello.
