Ms. Bette Kulp in her letter of April 9 is flat wrong when she says women earn only 77 cents compared with men earning $1 “for the same job.” The Equal Pay Act codified the principle of “equal pay for equal work” 50 years ago. Any employer engaging in gender-based discrimination today is an idiot just begging to get sued.
The leading study published by the federal government in 2009 came to the “unambiguous conclusion” that the 77-cent-to-$1 pay difference is “almost entirely the result of the individual choices being made by both male and female workers,” such as picking different jobs, working less overtime, taking more time off to raise children, etc.
The “Paycheck Fairness Act” — who could possibly be against “paycheck fairness?” — is actually a “Lawyer Paycheck Act” for trial lawyers and a gift of taxpayer funds to Democratic Party friends so that they can pad their own pockets by conducting more “studies.”
Of course, that won’t stop desperate Democratic candidates and the mainstream media from using the phony 77 cents argument to resurrect the “War on Women” this election year and again suckering the voters.
