Having searched for a reason for the lack of public comment regarding the Russian intrusion into — and anticipated annexation of — Crimea, as well as the strong response by the United States, I tended to blame it on the usual complacency of people who do not bother with problems taking place “over there.”
Then I dismissed couch-potato-ry and decided people must be embarrassed by the cynicism demonstrated by our government. After all, how can we castigate takeovers by other countries when we ourselves are masters at it? Did we not take Texas from Mexico? Moreover, not being satisfied enough, did we not take the rest of the Western states, as well?
Ah, but that was a long time ago; well, more recently, we helped England take the Islas Malvinas (Falkland Islands) from Argentina for the very same reason that Russia is taking Crimea: Sympathizers wanted to secede.
Therefore, I concluded, it must be that lack of comment is because people are embarrassed by our own hypocrisy.
