I am thrilled to read of The Tribune’s participation in Sunshine Week, an initiative to promote transparent government. Many landmark Brown Act and Public Records Act cases were fought and won by newspapers.
I applaud The Tribune for pursuing the terms of Paso Robles’ settlement with former police Officer Jon Tatro. “The people have the right of access to information concerning the conduct of the people’s business,” reads our state constitution. Yet, why Morro Bay terminated its attorney and city manager remains a mystery.
Every transgression leaves the people in the dark. Most go unchallenged. Elected officials must employ diligence, and sometimes courage, to uphold transparency laws. Sunshine from The Tribune will help keep the open path well lit. Litigation is a last resort that is less necessary where sunshine exists.
