I would like to respond to Don Bearden’s March 10 letter to the editor urging the Board of Supervisors to overturn the San Luis Obispo Planning Commission’s Feb. 6 decision to approve the McDonald’s application to build a restaurant at the former Bank of America building in Los Osos.
Mr. Bearden states: “The commission decided that McDonald’s did not need a drive-through, knowing that decision was a deal breaker.” I attended the meeting, and the commissioners decided on removing the drive-through after a two-hour discussion about the pros and cons of the drive-through. In fact, Commissioner Irving, who represents the Atascadero area, said he visited the location and was concerned about the set-up of the 24-hour drive-through and the traffic congestion/safety problems it would cause. The commission spent the afternoon closely reviewing the project and voted 4-1 to approve the application, minus the drive-through.
McDonald’s received its approval but has appealed the decision to the Board of Supervisors to try and get the drive-through back in. I urge the Board to uphold the commissioners’ thorough and thoughtful decision. Don’t allow a 24-hour drive-through in Los Osos.
