So, Crimea has asked to join Russia. Really?
I can’t seem to shake this sense of déjà vu. Let me see, there were the Baltic countries (Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania) in 1940-45, Hungary in 1956, and Czechoslovakia in 1968. Oh, and let’s not forget about the nail-biter in Poland during 1980-81.
History exposes Putin’s fallacious claim that Russian troops are in Crimea to protect the Russian-speaking residents of the Ukrainian province. Russian leaders have used military force to intimidate reform-minded leaders of Eastern European countries and force the submission of thousands of people into oppression. What is happening in the Ukraine is not new.
Putin is playing by the book, and that is the Brezhnev Doctrine. Consequently, Putin is acting in a predictable role. The question is, will Western Europe and the United States also act as before, or will this time be different?
