North County is not the only area with water problems. Several wells located on properties near Laetitia winery have gone dry, and homeowners are having to truck in water. These wells are not in a typical water basin, but are drilled in fractured rock formations. In such formations, you are lucky if you hit water at all. Even if you are fortunate enough to hit water, there is no guarantee the well will continue to produce.
These properties are outside the adjudicated Santa Maria groundwater basin but are an important source of recharge to the Five Cities area. The county is considering an application to develop 102 homes in a cluster that will only make an untenable situation worse.
