President Barack Obama has a difficult decision ahead with the Keystone XL pipeline project. I’ve been watching the debate for some time now, and I just can’t seem to find enough evidence out there that this will be a good thing for anyone but the oil companies. America’s top climate scientists agree that Keystone would be a climate disaster.
Each year, Keystone XL would carry and emit the carbon equivalent of putting an additional 37.7 million cars on the road. That’s a lot of additional carbon pollution (181 million metric tons according to the State Department report). Even the State Department admits this pipeline will create very few permanent jobs and an increase in carbon emissions from the tar sands oil will continue to contribute to climate-related droughts, hurricanes and fires.
I believe that we have a moral obligation to deliver a healthy planet to our future generations. I think that is something we can all agree on. Rejection of the proposed Keystone pipeline is one of the most important and immediate executive steps that President Obama can take to address the climate crisis. Let’s let him know we support a decision against the Keystone XL pipeline.
