Not only has President Barack Obama snubbed Premier Vladimir Putin by cancelling their Moscow summit for granting temporary asylum to Edward Snowden, now our president is accusing his Russian counterpart of restarting the Cold War. Who is restarting what?
Since Mikhail Gorbachev unilaterally dismantled the Soviet Union, the United States lost no time in encircling Russia with military bases and missiles. Even so, the Soviets did not fire a single shot (verbal or otherwise) toward us. Also since the fall of the Soviet Union, countless Russian defectors sought — and were granted — asylum in the United States. The last two (in 1992 and 2000) were intelligence officers welcomed by the CIA.
It seems to me that the United States at all levels is paranoid and obsessed with a sense of persecution.
Rather than sulk like a child whose ball has been taken away, why not take the high road and show that the United States, with the mightiest military machine the world has ever seen, is not bothered by a rare and solitary defection?
Mr. President, tear down this wall of words.
