In response to Patti Launders’ letter of July 26: Patti, hopefully you will sleep better after reading this, as is it a bit odd to me that you are losing sleep over such a beautiful thing.
First, the sale of these animals helps the kids and families in many ways, responsibility among them. The money from selling their animals helps their families, or is put away for education. I know; I was in the FFA. A portion of the money made goes back to the expense of raising the animal.
Further, you miss the point of the selflessness of Christine Allen. This wonderful, loving young woman could have kept the money and spent it on any number of things. Instead, she donated that steer to feed the hungry in our county. It sounds as though she lost sleep over the fact that there are families in this county who don’t know where their next meal is coming from — a worthy cause to lose sleep over. Not only that, she made a huge impression on the other young people around her who are now carrying on her legacy. Christine Allen was an inspiration to all of us.
