I am dismayed regarding the lack of discussion over the spying the U.S. government has carried out on not only its own citizens, but also friendly countries. It seems that the emphasis in the media is about the capture and prosecution of the people who brought these clearly unlawful activities to light. The party line seems to be that we need to carry on these activities in order to maintain our safety. Some Americans feel that they are willing to forfeit their liberty in order to be a little safer. I say, anyone who gives up their freedom and liberty for safety doesn’t deserve either.
Are we so afraid for our safety that we very passively and obediently allow our government to trample our Constitution? Where is this “land of the free and home of the brave?”
If we find out that our government kills civilians as in the video “Collateral Murder,” or that we torture people, both acts against the Geneva Convention, our response is not to prosecute the perpetrators of those atrocities, but to prosecute the people who brought them to light. In short, we’re focusing on the wrong thing.
