I have a thought that I have never heard mentioned before which might bring in some extra revenue to the city.
As I understand, a person with a handicap placard can park at any meter without paying. It is common knowledge that people abuse having a placard when they are not truly handicapped. People who have had knee surgery, for example, probably don’t need special consideration for six months.
When it comes to parking at meters (rather than in designated blue spaces) there is no rationale behind the idea that people should be able to park for free as long as they like. Just because one is handicapped doesn’t necessarily mean they are unable to afford parking! If the city could collect this revenue, over time it would add up. At least it might help pay for all of the times that the meter heads have been switched out.
