The Tribune’s July 7 editorial about affordable housing failed to point out that these plans actually increase the cost of homes for 80 percent of the people. If we truly want to keep home values down, we must encourage competitive building projects to increase our inventory of homes. Any new projects face the same problem: no water. Yet we live right next to the Pacific Ocean.
Any funds collected from builders shouldn’t go to a few lucky people, but should go to the development of environmentally safe desalinization plants that benefit everyone. And no, I’m not a builder, I’m a retired person who would really like to keep the small town atmosphere that we all enjoy. However, if we don’t allow some new homes to be built, prices will only continue to escalate.
