If Republicans intend to be a relevant political party in the future, they need to re-examine their role in the U.S. government. In a republic, the populace elects representatives to enact laws that reflect the will of the electorate. Obviously, conservative members of Congress are constantly ignoring the wishes of their constituents.
In a recent poll, 90 percent of the populace was in favor of background checks for gun purchases. The overwhelming tide of public opinion was ignored under pressure from the gun lobby. Most Americans now favor same-sex marriage. Whether influenced by religion, demographics or ignorance, hard-core conservatives continually resist the will of the people. When health care, education, the infrastructure and rising fuel costs are primary concerns, military spending takes precedence.
If there is to be a healthy conservatism in this country, it needs to be a progressive conservatism. Backward thinking has no place on a rapidly evolving planet.
Since 2009, the primary purpose of the GOP seems to have been to discredit President Obama. Any concern for the welfare of the American people has become an afterthought.
