I urge San Luis Coastal Unified School District to reverse plans to eliminate vitally needed teacher librarian positions.
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which support 21st century readiness for students, are at the forefront of state and district initiatives. It would be a mistake to reduce teacher librarians while we are at the same time adding technology and working to increase literacy and 21st century skills that involve cross-curricular, project-based learning.
Teacher librarians are at the center of CCSS skills, the leaders of information literacy and digital citizenship and catalysts of collaboration among and between curricular areas.
Research has shown and evidence supports, time and time again:

1.) That schools with well-funded and well-staffed libraries score higher on high stakes testing
2.) The importance of teacher librarians as leaders in 21st-century skills
3.) That teacher librarians’ credentialed expertise instructing in digital literacy and cyber safety meets state and federal legislation.
