It is ironic that the San Luis Coastal school board uses overcrowding as an issue in determining the fate of Teach Elementary.
Overcrowding at Del Mar Elementary in Morro Bay has also been mentioned in another context. Sunnyside Elementary in Los Osos and Morro Bay Elementary were both closed to save operating expenses and consolidate underused campuses. Those closed campuses are currently used/leased for other purposes but were built as elementary schools to serve the children of San Luis Coastal Unified School District. Did it not occur to the “long-range” planners at the district that those campuses may be needed for their intended purposes when conditions change, as they inevitably do? Were there no provisions incorporated into their plans for alternate use to reclaim those campuses when needed?
