I would simply like to state that California schools are inundated with students who do not speak English. States such as Arizona, Texas, Nevada and our own can hardly pretend to compare with the rest of the 50 when immigration is such an issue in our border states.
While San Luis Obispo County sees a little less of the immigration issues than say, Mendocino County, Santa Barbara County and many others, the state numbers reflect an overall issue.
I’m not stating I’m against immigration (and I’ve seen the de-flux numbers recently). I just want us all to know that many California students enter kindergarten without speaking English.
Unfortunately (related or not), many students enter school without knowing how to wipe their nose or tie their shoes.
This being established, our teachers are towing a load larger than they were intended to. They should have the freedom to teach math, science and reading from day one — not three years later, when their students have finally learned what either their immigrant parents, or their over-materialistic and ambitious parents, never taught them.
