It’s January again, and time to honor the Supreme Court decision of 1973, Roe v. Wade.
This 40-year-old decision is at the core of women’s rights — the right of women to control their own bodies.
It found a personal right to privacy in the Ninth Amendment to the Constitution, protecting the right of a woman to make decisions about her body, including the decision to terminate a pregnancy.
It changed the cultural landscape of America by giving women flexibility to plan their own parenting opportunities.
Never miss a local story.
Despite right-wing rhetoric, the majority of Americans still agree that, while they may personally oppose abortion, a woman’s right to choose is a private one that belongs to the woman and not to the government.
That’s what pro-choice advocates have been saying all along — it’s your choice. No one should force you to have an abortion, or prevent you from having or choosing that option. That’s the crux of the Roe v. Wade decision: It’s a matter of privacy.
Support your right to choose. Join pro-choice activists on Jan. 22 at 12:30 p.m. at Broad and Higuera streets in San Luis Obispo to demonstrate your support for choice.
