On behalf of French Hospital Medical Center, I would like to thank the surfing community for their recent support of our Hearst Cancer Resource Center through the first annual “Surfing for Hope” event. Local surfers, visitors, friends and family members came together for a benefit dinner in Avila Beach and a surfing contest in Pismo Beach to raise needed funds for cancer patients.
Bob Voglin, cancer survivor and surfing legend, spearheaded a group of volunteers to create this unique event with the help of Drs. Tom Spillane and Karen Allen. Their compassion and dedication coupled with a passion for surfing raised more than $57,000. The funds will support the many programs and services at the center as well as a special “Angel of Hope” fund that provides financial assistance for the medical needs of cancer patients.
We are deeply grateful for their efforts to make a significant difference in the lives of those struggling with this terrible disease. We are proud and humbled to be the recipient of such kindness and generosity.
