To all women on this day
Inspired by the column of Linda Lewis Griffith in Friday’s paper, on this Mother’s Day I will think about my mother — a truly lovely woman who didn’t live long enough — and all the other women whose lives have touched mine.
They are my daughter, my friends, colleagues, aunts, sisters-in-law, nieces, etc. They have provided inspiration, encouragement and support. They have laughed and cried with me over the years, and I want them to know how much their love and support has meant to me.
Griffith is profoundly correct about the unique power of women in groups, so I acknowledge all the women in the groups I have participated in over the past 10 years in San Luis Obispo County — Atascadero AAUW, Friends of the Atascadero Library, the Class Act dancers, SLO CASA, Atascadero Loaves and Fishes, Mobile Meals, and St. Timothy’s Church in Morro Bay.
Never miss a local story.
Our communities are slowly being transformed by the caring commitment of women in groups such as these, and I have been enriched by their example.
You have challenged me. You have mentored me. You have nurtured me. I salute you.
The gift of love
Are you wondering what to get your wonderful mother for Mother’s Day, knowing there is nothing she really needs or wants but to know you love her?
How about honoring her with a financial donation to the Prado Day Center? Did you know the Prado Day Care Center and the Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter for the homeless are both nonprofit organizations that receive grants (which have been cut drastically) from the city and/or county of San Luis Obispo but are not run by them?
Not only will your mother be honored by your compassion in assisting homeless people, but you can deduct it from your income taxes! For more information, go to www.pradodaycenter.org or call 786-0617.
