I concede that there is merit to what Nicholas D. Kristof of the New York Times says about the conservative and/or orthodoxy control and influence in Congress and in Israel today.
This is contrary to what the original Zionists envisioned for the Jewish people. However, the most elementary and critical principle in the argument that Kristof consistently fails to mention is Arab unwillingness to accept Israel’s right to exist.
Until this hurdle is surmounted, his voice rings empty.

A lousy deal
During the last 30 years, presidents raised the debt ceiling 30 times. It was all very quiet.
Reagan raised the debt ceiling 18 times!
The first time it comes up in the Obama presidency, the “Teapublicans” take the government hostage. End result: a lousy deal, forcing the president to pay a ransom to rescue us once more, and a downgrade of our credit rating, which means more of our taxes going out to pay the interests on our debt.
The Gingrich gang brought our government to its knees once. Just how long are Americans going to tolerate these Teapublicans?

Where’s the tech?
I was thrilled like everyone else in Atascadero to have a cutting-edge movie theater open right downtown. Our theater, to guests from Los Angeles, rivals the best that L.A. has to offer.
However, since the SLO Film Festival collaborated at our theatre in March, there have only been three movies that I have wanted to see.
Those of us who like independent films are legion in the North County. We would love if one screen could be dedicated to showing the films that we can only get in SLO. I even saw “Midnight in Paris” at a local theater in West Monroe, La. Yet, it has not been shown in North County theaters. “Midnight in Paris,” by the way, has been held over in SLO for most of the summer.
Last Friday, we went to one of the movies I wanted to see. It was a mainstream movie, “Harry Potter,” and was advertised on the marquee and in the paper as showing in 3-D. Yet, when we saw it, it was only offered in 2-D. Where’s the technology that was promised?
Democrats often delight in speaking of the “rich fat cat Republicans.”
Wonder if the poor Democrats had to take up a collection in order to attend President Obama’s recent birthday/fundraiser in Chicago at $35,800 a plate? $35,800! That’s more than many Americans earn in a year, if they are lucky enough to have a job.

Why the rush?
I received my ballot and can understand the City Council wanting to put binding arbitration to a vote, but I cannot for the life of me see why they could not have waited until November.
Why waste $100,000 now? Are not those the tax dollars being squandered? That part makes me wonder, why the rush?
