I am an employee at the Phillips 66 Santa Maria Refinery, which has recently been under a lot of scrutiny. Let me assure you: Safety is our number one priority!
The Central Coast is my home, where I was born and raised.
I would never back a project that I felt would harm my community.
With that being said, I fully support this rail spur extension project and believe that this is a positive for our community.
The Phillips 66 rail extension project is an opportunity to seek other sources of crude oil, instead of only relying on unreliable and costly oil via pipeline. If our facility continues to operate at half-capacity, many jobs could potentially be in jeopardy.
There are currently two to three trains per week transporting oil safely through San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties from San Ardo to Los Angeles County.
This project would not add any new drastic impacts as the opposition would like you to believe. This is simply an extension of rail to be built off an existing rail spur that is 100 percent completely on Phillips 66 property. Transportation of oil will be in newer, state-of-theart cars with numerous safety features.
