Three years ago, San Luis Obispo County was teased with the plans that included a remodel of the Fremont Theatre. Those plans would have included an Imax screen.
Now, the new Fremont Square plan does not mention a plan for the current Fremont Theatre or the Downtown Centre Cinemas. Both theaters are behind the times. San Luis Obispo’s northern neighbor, Atascadero, has even beaten San Luis Obispo in getting a higher-end movie theater. Galaxy in Atascadero has a bar and D-Box seating.
Today, Imax isn’t even the biggest buzz in the theater world. Now, there is Cinemark’s XD auditoriums, Regal’s RPX auditoriums, D-Box seating and sit-down restaurants in high-end movie theaters.
Currently, the nearest sitdown restaurant and movie combination is in Thousand Oaks at the Muvico Cinema, and the nearest Imax is in Camarillo.
As the South County and the city of San Luis Obispo grow, the area needs to add more entertainment for locals and tourists.
