I was so glad to see the supportive letter for Haggen grocery stores from Wendy Brown (Letters, “Haggen improves,” Aug. 15).
After reading two critical letters in the past 10 days and waiting/hoping someone would counteract the unfair descriptions of Haggen supermarkets, I decided that “someone” was probably me.
Based on my experiences as a Trader Joe’s and California Fresh Market shopper, I occasionally shopped at a nearby Albertsons in Arroyo Grande. I thought their prices were on the high side, but their special sales were good.
I was curious about this new Haggen company and have shopped there three times in the past month with great pleasure!
Never miss a local story.
Their prices are about the same as Albertsons, but their deli, meat/fish display was kept fresh and appealing, and the whole store sparkles.
They are trying very hard to compete with the Wal-Mart nearby, where I also sometimes shop.
Equal-opportunity buyer? Each supermarket offers something different. I also love the day-old rack — check it out.
If they have to downsize some locations, that’s an efficient business practice. Live with it! We are so lucky to have so many choices.
