Who is Greg Bettencourt and the July 4th Safety Committee (“Best, safest July 4,” Letters, July 31)?
In his letter, he states that this Fourth of July in Cayucos was the safest ever.
Really? I live on Orville Avenue. On the Fourth of July, one block behind me, some people were shooting off fireworks and firecrackers. Directly behind that is a bone-dry hillside.
We are in an extreme drought with an even more extreme fire danger. I don’t see a great danger in chairs being put out before the Fourth. I do see a great danger in illegal fireworks being set off all over Cayucos. From where I live, I could see them everywhere.
Never miss a local story.
If Bettencourt’s committee is really concerned about safety, perhaps next year they could tackle the real safety issue: illegal fireworks in our dry, drought-stricken community that could potentially cause extensive property damage and loss of life.
