In response to letters by Frank Roza (“It’s time for the left to give Donald Trump a chance,” Aug. 20) and Larry Bargenquast (“Stop ignoring President Donald Trump’s accomplishments,” Sept. 4) criticizing my Aug. 12 letter blasting Trump:
Thank you, gentlemen, for the debate. Here are my responses:
▪ There is no good excuse for the Electoral College. It gives voting power to land vs. people. It’s insane for a 3-million-vote loser to become president.
▪ Trump has hatefully smeared and violently maligned anyone who opposes him. He is a smear-tactic liar, a racist demagogue, a rouser of dangerous sentiments, and a lazy, flashy showman who makes a lot of noise while accomplishing virtually nothing. Then he takes credit for economic momentum already underway. A commission on nonexistent “voter fraud” and abandoning the world on climate change are not “accomplishments.”
Never miss a local story.
▪ Trump rallies are “uplifting” with a “theme of hope for all”? Really? Never any violence or law breaking by his people? Tell that to protesters beaten while he taunts his crowds to do it. Tell that to the victims of violent hate crimes that have skyrocketed since Trump’s campaign and regime. Tell that to Heather Heyer, run down by a Trump-inspired Nazi fanatic in Charlottesville.
Fascist movements in the 20th century used the same methods. Whipping up huge crowds into violent fury. Scapegoating minorities. Sowing hatred and division. Attacking the free press. Appealing to the lowest and most base instincts against “the other.”
Trump’s is not a fascist movement or regime yet, but stay tuned.
