‘Sometimes dogs get overlooked at the shelter, and Kirby’s one such dog. With so many different sizes, colors and temperaments of dogs, a guy can fall through the cracks — even if he’s young, likes kids and plays well with other dogs. We know this is true about Kirby because he was in Camp Paws.

“Camp Paws is the San Luis Obispo Animal Services’ summer camp for kids. Campers get to spend time loving and being loved by shelter dogs while learning pet care skills. They also learn how to train their shelter pals, which in turn makes the shelter dogs more adoptable.

“Kirby was an ace at Camp Paws — he passed his basic obedience training, and he loves the ‘down’ command, where he gets to lay on his belly with his legs splayed out like a frog. And beyond the new skills he learned, Kirby loved the agility course, the exercise and all the attention.

“So why is Kirby still homeless?

“Kirby is one of those dogs that shines in the sunshine and not in a kennel. One-on-one his good qualities show — he’s good with kids, is an excellent excuse to go for a hike, walks well on a leash and excels as a playmate with other dogs.

“To help him find his lifelong family, Kirby is in foster care with one of the Camp Paws’ teen staffers and her family. This means prospective adopters will get to know the real Kirby — a fun, affectionate boy with a charming set of dog skills.”

— Animal shelter volunteer Ellen Perryess

For more information about Kirby, call the volunteer line at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter at 781-4413.

The Animal Services shelter is at 885 Oklahoma Ave., off Highway 1 in San Luis Obispo.
