‘Kevin’s a dog we normally could adopt out seven times over at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter—he’s small, housebroken, quiet and likes everyone. His photo doesn’t show it, but Kevin has two expressive ears that perk right up when he sees people coming.
“The sticking point is, Kevin has a broken leg his previous owner didn’t fix. By the time Kevin came to the shelter, the damage to the bone, muscles and ligaments meant his leg would need to be amputated.
“Nobody is happy about this, but surgery won’t fix his leg, and leaving the leg untreated makes him vulnerable to serious injury.
“Fortunately Kevin’s timing is good. The shelter’s Animals Requesting Friends fund has enough to cover the cost of his surgery. Because these funds ebb and flow with donations and demand, they’re not always available, but this week, Kevin will have his surgery.
“As Kevin’s foster mom, it seems to me Kevin isn’t bothered by his predicament. He doesn’t appear to notice his useless leg; he just hitches it up and off he goes. Kevin likes to play with his toy, chase a ball and go for walks just like any other happy dog. Kevin’s glad being who he is—whether he’s got four functioning legs or not.”
Kevin will be ready for adoption by Sept. 1.
