‘Coal, with jewel-bright eyes, is a beautiful 3-month-old kitten. He is affectionate and has a nice, solid purr, although he has spent more than a third of his life at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter.

“Coal is not unique. ‘Cat Room 3’ is full; each kennel holds a colorful variety of kittens — all reaching out for attention.

“Housing kittens together is good because kittens like to play, but this means we have to find homes for three or more kittens before we have room to house an incoming cat or litter of kittens. Kitten season is always a difficult time for overcrowding at the shelter.

“I worry about kittens like Coal, because even though he is as cute as he can be, with so many kittens his age or younger, it’s likely he’ll be overlooked.

“This is especially true for black cats and kittens. If he’s at the shelter another month, he will have a hard time competing with the eight-week-old puffball-like kittens that are sure to come.

“Sadly, I’ve seen this before — kittens reaching adulthood without having spent any time in a home.

“To help kittens like Coal, and other cats, volunteers and staff are hosting a Kittenpalooza, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday on the lawn in front of the shelter.

“As always, kittens, cats, rabbits and dogs will also be available for adoptions in the shelter.”

— Animal shelter volunteer Ellen Perryess
