Kermit King Elementary School closed its gates Thursday after a bobcat was spotted on a neighboring hillside. A nearby homeowner called the school and the Department of Fish and Game after spotting the cat early Thursday morning, about 50 meters from the school. Wildlife is uncommon in the area, said school clerk Debbie Perry.
Fish and Game agents came to the neighborhood and shooed the cat away, Perry said. Students were still able to go outside for recess and lunch, and all parents were notified of the incident through a phone tree.
Kermit King is located in a residential neighborhood, at 700 Schoolhouse Circle.

Morro Bay
The U.S. Postal Service has temporarily closed its post office box area after normal business hours because a registered sex offender was found sleeping inside the building and allegedly defacing the property, authorities said.
Morro Bay customers will not have access to their boxes between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m. until further notice from postal officials.
Law enforcement officials said that Todd Loos, who is homeless, was found sleeping in the post office on numerous occasions.
Morro Bay police said that Loos reportedly has moved to Santa Maria, but could not confirm that.

The Downtown Association is accepting entry applications for the 31st Annual Holiday Parade at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 in downtown.
The theme this year is "Downtown Wonderland." Organizers are asking for imaginative floats and entries. Thousands of spectators gather each year at the event.
Any individual, group, school, church, business is eligible to enter the parade. Parade applications may be found online at www.downtownslo.com or by calling the San Luis Obispo Downtown Association at 541-0286. The deadline for applications is November 10th.

Atascadero
City firefighters have received an international honor for their efforts to reduce damage from residential structure fires.
The fire department this week received the 2005 Life Safety Achievement Award from the Residential Fire Safety Institute for successful prevention efforts the group said have translated to no loss of life in house fires last year.
Atascadero is one of 769 fire departments in the U.S., Canada, Italy, Japan and Greece to receive the recognition.
The safety institute advocates for use of residential fire sprinklers, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Paso Robles
Paso Robles teachers will likely be getting an additional 4.25 percent raise this year under a tentative agreement reached between the school district and teachers’ union.
The raise, which would be retroactive to June 1, was reached in negotiations between representatives of the district and the teachers’ collective bargaining unit. The union and school board still need to vote to approve the raise.
Paso Robles teachers have already received just over 2 percent in wage increases this year.

Crafts and cars will be the focus of the 10th annual Golden Oak Festival and Golden State Classic Car Show on Saturday.
The festival in downtown Paso Robles has 90 vendors showing everything from garden art to antique glassware.
Car lovers will be able to check out more than 200 classic cars displayed by the Golden State Classic Car Club. Food will be available.
The festival takes place in City Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The car show will take place on nearby 11th Street and in the park. Admission is free. For more information, call 238-4103.
