In a recent column about grudges — which I’ve now been educated are actually pet peeves rather than grudges — I asked readers to send me their own after the piece I wrote about road hogs on Los Osos Valley Road. The following are just a few culled from the mailbag.

Bill:

I could not agree more with your column on the passing lane speeders on Los Osos Valley Road. It’s got to be one of the more beautiful stretches of road in the county. What’s the hurry to get through it, just to regroup at the next light?

The only thing I could add is the grudge I carry for the mindless piggies tailgating the butt end of my car like a dog being friendly.

— Jeff Lewis, Los Osos

Hi Bill, I hadn’t considered it a grudge, more of a pet peeve, but I cannot stand it when people throw cigarette butts out the windows of their cars. My friends can attest that this simply drives me bonkers. Once, years ago, I was a radio DJ, I … asked listeners to call in with their own pet peeves and was inundated all day long (a recurring peeve: roommates who refused to refill the ice tray).

It isn’t the crowding-in at the last second that’s the big problem on LOVR — that happens on roads all over the county and the state, because California drivers are among the rudest in the world. And I don’t come to that conclusion without portfolio, as I have lived and driven in several different states, countries and continents.

The problem on LOVR is the SIGNAGE.

NOWHERE on that two-lane stretch is a sign that says: SPEED LIMIT 55. Instead, there is a sign that says SLOWER DRIVERS KEEP RIGHT, and that makes drivers conclude that the passing lane on the left is a 65 mph lane, because other 65 mph roads in the state are similarly marked.

So what do you get? An infamous local speed trap. …

You asked if anyone else had some pet peeves about freeway drivers. I have one that irks me to no end when it happens. It is when one lane is closing for some reason and there is a flashing sign that says that the lane is ending. They give plenty of time for everyone to get into the one good lane and it really bugs me when cars continue barreling on and then expect people to let them in when they are forced off the closing lane.

It really, really ticks me off and I’m sure many feel the same way.

It felt good getting this off my chest.
