Vaccines set for Poly students

The health center has received 3,500 doses for injection; those with chronic health problems are urged to take advantage

H1N1 vaccinations will be available to Cal Poly students beginning today.

Cal Poly Health Center officials said the school received 3,500 doses for injection. Additional vaccinations are expected to be available in the coming weeks, officials said in a statement.

Immunizations will only be available to enrolled students from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Students who are ill or have egg allergies cannot receive the vaccine, officials said.

administered from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Cal Poly Health Center.

Students with chronic health problems such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease or a weakened immune system are being asked to get the vaccination today, of ficials said in a statement.

Vaccinations will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis. Officials are asking students to arrive at the Health Center at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday or Thursday to receive the H1N1 shot. Regular flu shots will not be available at these times.

The Health Center will be open for regular services from 8 to 11 a.m. on immunization drive days but will close at 11 a.m. to administer immunizations in the afternoon. Counseling services will operate during normal hours.

In San Luis Obispo County, 111 people have been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus and one person has died from complications from it, according to the Public Health Department.

San Luis Obispo County has placed a “substantial” order for doses of the H1N1 vaccine, and on Friday the county had received 5,600 doses, which officials said was only a portion of the vaccine requested from manufacturers.

It’s unclear when or if the county will receive more vaccinations this week. County health officials could not be reached for comment Monday.
