Colony Days to showcase history

Atascadero event will feature parade, band performance, drumline competition

Atascadero will celebrate its roots Saturday at the 36th annual Colony Days celebration. The daylong event will feature a parade, a performance by the Colony Band, a drumline competition and marching band field show; and a historical re-enactment of the city�s founding years.

The Atascadero Colony Days Committee was founded in 1973 by Maggie Rice to provide the city with an annual celebration commemorating the founding of the colony by E.G. Lewis in 1913.

Here�s a glimpse of the various festivities:

� Lions Club pancake breakfast at 7 a.m., corner of El Camino Real and West Mall � pancakes, sausage, eggs and orange juice. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

� The 36th annual Colony Days Parade, 10 a.m., staging on Olmeda Avenue and West Mall, proceeding to Lewis Avenue and over the new Lewis Avenue Bridge, along Capistrano Avenue to Highway 41, west on Highway 41 to El Camino Real, north on El Camino Real to Traffic Way, then east on Traffic Way to Lewis Avenue.

� �Strike up the Band� Colony Band Festival featuring high school bands from Atascadero, Templeton, Righetti, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles and Atascadero Junior High.

The Inglewood High School Band, winner of the 2007 and 2008 Battle of the High School Marching Bands, will also march in the parade.

A drumline competition will be held afterthe parade at 11:30 a.m. in the Sunken Gardens, and a field show competition at Memorial Stadium at Atascadero High School will follow at 1 p.m.

The cost for the field show competition is $5 for adults and $2 for kids younger than 12.

� Tent City: A historical reenactment from noon to 4:30 p.m. fashioned after the city�s earliest residents, who lived in a tent city complete with dwellings, laundry, a market and entertainment.

Adjacent to the downtown Sunken Gardens, along Atascadero Creek, tents will be raised and cast members will highlight life as it was in 1913 � including barbershop, ice cream parlor and real estate office.
